Root Canal Treatment

Save and Restore a Damaged Tooth

A root canal treatment can repair and save a badly damaged or infected tooth, helping to relieve discomfort and protect your natural smile.

Understanding the Treatment

What Is Root Canal Treatment?

A root canal is a treatment used to repair and save a badly damaged tooth.

Root canal treatment involves removing the damaged area of the tooth, known as the pulp, before cleaning and disinfecting the inside of the tooth and then filling and sealing it. This procedure is also known as endodontic treatment.

The term “root canal” comes from the name of the inside of the long roots of the tooth. Root canals can become infected in several ways, although the most common causes are tooth decay and dental trauma. A cracked tooth or deep cavity may also contribute.

Restoring Your Tooth

How Is Root Canal Treatment Carried Out?

If the root canal becomes infected, the tooth is likely to become painful. Your dentist will first take X-rays to examine where the decay is located.

The treatment will start with a local anaesthetic being applied to the affected area. Your dentist will then carefully clean the infected tissue using special antiseptic fluid and files.

At a second visit, a permanent seal will be applied to the affected tooth. In between appointments, your dentist will use a temporary filling to plug the gap.

Once the root canal treatment has been completed, you may be offered a crown for the tooth. This can help protect the tooth if it is at risk of becoming damaged in the future.

The local anaesthetic will be used for the procedure so you do not experience pain. However, it is usual to experience some level of pain after the anaesthetic has worn off. This is usually manageable with over the counter anti-inflammatories. Contrary to popular belief, a root canal treatment is usually no more painful than a filling.
